What is VPS? VPS, short for Virtual Private Server, is just like a dedicated server but virtually, not physically. In essence, a physical dedicated server (also called a virtual host) is virtualized using virtualization software like OpenVZ, into a number of mini virtual private servers (virtual dedicated servers). All these VPSs are isolated containers by themselves and do not share any resources with each other. Each VPS can be individually rebooted and have its own root access.
Why VPS hosting? VPS is the best known solution for hosting clients looking out for dedicated hosting functionality but do not want to bear the comparatively large expense of dedicated hosting. VPS allows you to have full root access, so you can install any complex software of your choice as if the VPS were a physical dedicated server! So whether you want to change the PHP version, have java servlet, or you want compiler access, you can do it with VPS. Best of all, you do not need to suffer because some other client on the same server has spammed and the server IP is blacklisted, or his website has suddenly started receiving a lot of traffic and the server goes down. Even DOS attacks on websites on one VPS container will not affect your website which is on another VPS container, unlike shared hosting.
What are the limitations of VPS? There are no limitations! You are only limited to using resources that you have purchased. So, if you've purchased a VPS plan with 50Gb HDD, you obviously cannot have 100Gb data. We do offer upgrade options if your needs change. Additionally, you will need to adhere to the State, Federal and cyber laws, including anti spam laws. Rest, you can do anything within your purchased resources.
What backup do you provide? We perform a full container backup every week. In addition, you can purchase FTP backups on physically different servers in blocks of 20Gb each, for $10/ month. Backup also includes an additional 300Gb data transfer /month.
What are your software and hardware specifications? We use X8 Intel Xeon Quad core servers to power our VPSs, which is connected to the main gateway through a thick 1000MBPS uplink port. RAM, HDD, monthly bandwidth, etc will be as per the VPS plan purchased. For software, we use CentOS on the virtual host machine and OpenVZ for virtualization.
What is OpenVZ? OpenVZ is one of the most reliable, efficient and flexible open source container based virtualization software for linux operating systems. We use OpenVZ because we have found it to be more secure compared to others. Containers are better isolated, ensuring that applications do not conflict with each other. Each containers perform like individual servers and can be rebooted independently and has individual root access. Each can have IP addresses, OS, RAM memory as allotted, CPU resources, applications, system libraries, configuration files, etc. OpenVZ is also compatible with SolusVM.
What is SolusVM? SolusVM is a powerful GUI based commercial VPS management system. It is widely used to manage a VPS cluster with security and ease. Rebooting a VPS, reinstalling the OS, changing root password, etc can be easily done through your SolusVM control panel.
What control panel and operating systems do you offer? By default, we offer CentOS as the operating system. You can also choose another flavor of linux if you want, like Debian, Ubantu, Fedora, Suse, etc. The option to choose is mentioned at the time of ordering. All of these operating systems are free. For control panel, we offer cpanel (with Fantastico and RV Skin enabled) as default in some of the higher plans. However, you can choose cpanel with a lower plan also (at an extra cost), if you choose the configurator to custom build your VPS plan. Webmin is also available as a hosting control panel, which is free.
